She unlocks the black ASP handcuffs and pulls them off, then crouches and removes the ankle shackles, leaving Zoe unrestrained for the first time since the arrest. When Zoe asks what she is charged with, the only answer is “conspiracy to commit crime, the judge can tell you.” Then the order comes: strip down to your underwear, everything in the white bin. Zoe toes off her sneakers, peels away her socks, steps out of her denim shorts, and pulls off her top until she is standing in just her underwear, barefoot on the concrete. The officer helps unclasp a stuck necklace and drops it in the bin. “Turn around, hands on the wall.” Mackenzi re-cuffs Zoe behind her back, right wrist then left, and walks her to a steel bench that already has a handcuff fixed to it, clipping one of her cuffs to the waiting cuff so she is locked to the seat. “I’m going to go get your outfit, be right back, honey.” The door closes, and Zoe is left waiting on the cold bench, cuffed behind her back and chained in place, with nothing to do but shift, sigh, and wait.
